Conservative Republicans and their Tea Party compatriots are fond of name-dropping the U.S. Constitution as a way to defend their social agendas. They scream about “activist judges” and the government’s assault on the 2nd Amendment. They play on voter fears and accuse political opponents of un-American activities.
But the truth is that these social conservatives are only interested in what the Constitution says so long as it supports their preconceived biases. Their allegiance is not principled or disciplined, but rather specious and incoherent. They protest perceived violations of the Constitution but happily defy amendments and court rulings when those judgments don’t suit their own agendas.
